How to identify and react to different degrees of burns
10/06/2024Every year, emergency situations require rapid and effective responses to save lives. Knowing how to unblock an adult’s airway is a crucial skill that can make all the difference. This article explores techniques that have been validated and recommended by healthcare professionals, and are easy for anyone to apply. Simple actions can make all the difference before help arrives. Find out how you can be this everyday hero.
Understanding the urgency of airway obstruction
Airway obstruction can occur suddenly and requires immediate intervention to avoid serious or even fatal consequences. This emergency may be caused by food, vomit or foreign objects. It is essential to quickly recognise the signs of a severe obstruction, such as the inability to speak, cough or breathe, and abnormal breathing sounds or no sound at all.
The pat-on-the-back technique
One of the first methods to try is a pat on the back. Position yourself behind the person affected, lean them slightly forward and give them up to five firm taps between the shoulder blades with the heel of your hand. This method can help dislodge the object blocking the airway.
The Heimlich manoeuvre
If pats on the back aren’t enough, switch to the Heimlich manoeuvre. Stand behind the person, wrap your arms around their waist below the ribs and squeeze their abdomen with a rapid upward and inward movement. Repeat this gesture until the airways are clear.
When should you call for help?
If the above methods do not work quickly, it is vital to call the emergency services immediately while continuing to try to clear the airway. Clearly inform the emergency services of the situation and follow any instructions they may give you.
Prevention and awareness
Prevention is a fundamental aspect of respiratory safety. Be vigilant when eating food that is potentially difficult to chew, especially for the elderly or individuals with swallowing difficulties. First aid training is also crucial; it is available to everyone and is part of the training programme for the BLS AED SRC course, IAS 1 and IAS 2.
Prospects and implications
Learning techniques to clear the airways is more than a skill, it’s a responsibility. Everyone can find themselves in a situation where this knowledge is needed. Professional training and certified courses can prepare you to react effectively in an emergency, strengthening the chain of survival in our society.
