Target audience
Mental health first aid courses for adults are intended for a broad audience, including healthcare professionals, teachers, social workers and anyone wishing to better respond to mental health issues among those around them. They are designed for people who want to be prepared to intervene in a crisis and support those experiencing difficulties. Training is available in the cantons of Vaud, Geneva, Fribourg, Neuchâtel, Valais and Jura.
Objectives
The main objective of these courses is to provide participants with basic knowledge of mental health conditions and practical skills for effective intervention. Participants learn to recognize the early signs of mental health problems, approach affected people without judgement and encourage them to seek professional help.
Participants develop the skills to listen to, reassure and refer people to appropriate resources, while responding appropriately in a crisis.
Course content
The programme covers the main mental health conditions, including depression, anxiety, psychosis and substance use disorders. Participants acquire essential interpersonal skills and practical intervention methods.

Why ensa? A Swiss benchmark for mental health first aid
What is ensa?
ensa is the Swiss adaptation of the Australian « Mental Health First Aid » programme, introduced in Switzerland in 2019 by Pro Mente Sana with the support of the Beisheim and Ernst-Göhner foundations.
Objective: to enable non-specialists, employees, teachers, families and associations to acquire the basic knowledge needed to recognize mental health conditions, provide support and refer people to professional help in the event of a crisis.
The name « ensa » comes from an Australian Indigenous language and means « response », highlighting the hope of providing an appropriate response to psychological distress.
By choosing to offer ensa-compliant courses, SafetyFirst operates within a nationally recognized framework based on scientifically validated approaches and on the values of prevention, empathy and psychological support.
