What is BLS-AED-SRC training?
The BLS-AED-SRC course is the Swiss reference standard for basic life support. It is defined and certified by the Swiss Resuscitation Council (SRC), the national authority for cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
The acronym brings together three complementary components:
BLS: Basic Life Support
BLS (Basic Life Support) refers to the basic life-saving measures performed by a non-professional first responder in a life-threatening emergency.
It includes recognising cardiac arrest, alerting the professional emergency services, performing chest compressions (CPR) and providing ventilation. These measures help maintain minimal blood circulation until emergency responders arrive.
AED: Automated External Defibrillator
An AED (Automated External Defibrillator) is a portable device that analyses the heart rhythm and delivers an electric shock to restore a normal rhythm in the event of cardiac arrest or ventricular fibrillation.
BLS-AED training teaches you how to locate a defibrillator, switch it on and use it correctly — even without prior medical training. Modern devices guide the user step by step with voice instructions.
SRC: Swiss Resuscitation Council
The SRC (Swiss Resuscitation Council) is the independent Swiss organisation that defines national cardiopulmonary resuscitation guidelines in line with European and international standards (ERC, ILCOR).
A course bearing the SRC label guarantees standardised educational content, certified instructors and a certificate recognised throughout Switzerland. SafetyFirst is an SRC-approved provider.

A legal requirement for companies
In Switzerland, workplace first-aid training is not optional — it is a legal requirement.
Article 328 of the Swiss Code of Obligations requires employers to protect the health of their employees. The Labour Act goes further by requiring employers to take all necessary measures to protect workers’ physical and mental health.
Ordinance 3 to the Employment Act (Ordinance 3), Art. 36, specifies that the necessary first-aid resources must be available at all times, taking into account the company’s hazards, size and location.
SECO (State Secretariat for Economic Affairs) states in its commentary on Ordinance 3 that the aim is for trained first responders to be able to intervene within 3 minutes of an incident, throughout all working hours.
In practical terms, this means:

Training a sufficient number of employees in first-aid skills, including BLS-AED.

Having a first-aid plan tailored to the company’s risks.

Renewing training regularly (BLS-AED certificate valid for 2 years).
The MSST guidelines (occupational physicians and occupational safety specialists) also apply to companies facing particular hazards.
Risks of non-compliance: inspections by SUVA or SECO, fines, official orders — and, above all, a lost chance of survival for the victim in an emergency.
For obtaining a driving licence in Valais
First-aid training is mandatory to obtain a driving licence in Switzerland. It must be completed before taking the theory test.
The 10-hour first responder course is recognised by the Road Traffic Office. The certificate obtained is valid for 6 years for driving-licence purposes.
