Automated external defibrillators generally perform self-tests designed to detect certain faults. However, this does not relieve the company of the need to regularly monitor the condition of the device, its accessories and its installation environment.
A discharged battery, expired electrodes, a damaged cabinet or a status indicator signalling a fault may compromise the availability of the equipment when it is needed.
Maintenance helps to:
- identify consumables approaching their expiry date;
- detect a visible fault or one reported by the device;

What does an AED inspection include?
The scope of the service depends on the brand, model and age of the device, as well as the manufacturer’s recommendations.

- identifying the brand, model and serial number;
- visually inspecting the casing and accessories;
- checking the status indicator;
- reviewing the available self-test results;
- checking the presence and condition of the battery;
- checking the adult or paediatric electrodes;

Batteries and electrodes have a limited service life. Their expiry depends on the model, storage conditions and the manufacturer’s recommendations.
Electrodes must also be replaced after use or if their packaging has been opened, damaged or has expired. Depending on the device, paediatric electrodes or a specific device for children may be required.

Service after an AED has been used
Following an actual intervention, the AED must be inspected before being returned to service.
Depending on the model and circumstances, returning the device to service may require:
- replacing the electrodes used;
- checking or replacing the battery;
- restocking the emergency response kit;
- cleaning the outside of the device;
- checking its status indicator;
- checking the cabinet and signage;
- referring the device to the manufacturer or its technical service.
