An AED must remain accessible, properly equipped and ready to operate at all times. SafetyFirst comes directly to your premises to inspect your devices, monitor batteries and electrodes, replace the necessary consumables and ensure that all work carried out is properly documented.
This service is suitable for companies with a single AED as well as organisations equipped with several devices or operating across multiple sites in French-speaking Switzerland.
One-off inspection · Preventive maintenance · Consumable replacement · Equipment tracking
Keep your AED ready to operate
Automated external defibrillators generally perform self-tests designed to detect certain faults. However, this does not relieve the company of the need to regularly monitor the condition of the device, its accessories and its installation environment.
A discharged battery, expired electrodes, a damaged cabinet or a status indicator signalling a fault may compromise the availability of the equipment when it is needed.
Maintenance helps to:
- identify consumables approaching their expiry date;
- detect a visible fault or one reported by the device;
- check the integrity of the equipment;
- anticipate necessary replacements;
- maintain a record of inspections;
- ensure the ongoing tracking of one or more AEDs.
What does an AED inspection include?
The scope of the service depends on the brand, model and age of the device, as well as the manufacturer’s recommendations.
Depending on the equipment and the agreed service, an on-site inspection may include:
- identifying the brand, model and serial number;
- visually inspecting the casing and accessories;
- checking the status indicator;
- reviewing the available self-test results;
- checking the presence and condition of the battery;
- checking the adult or paediatric electrodes;
- recording expiry dates;
- checking the emergency response kit;
- checking the cabinet, mounting system and signage;
- cleaning the outside of the device;
- recording the work carried out.
Any fault requiring a repair, a manufacturer procedure or additional expertise is reported to the person responsible for the site.

Replacement of batteries, electrodes and consumables
Batteries and electrodes have a limited service life. Their expiry depends on the model, storage conditions and the manufacturer’s recommendations.
Electrodes must also be replaced after use or if their packaging has been opened, damaged or has expired. Depending on the device, paediatric electrodes or a specific device for children may be required.
SafetyFirst can supply and replace:
- compatible batteries;
- adult electrodes;
- paediatric electrodes;
- emergency response kits;
- pocket masks;
- storage accessories ;
- suitable cabinets and mounting systems.

One-off inspection or regular AED monitoring
One-off maintenance
A one-off inspection is particularly suitable when a device has not been checked for a long time, after a change of person responsible, before an internal audit or when a fault is identified.
It may also be requested after an AED has been used, in order to replace the electrodes, restock the emergency response kit and check that the device can be returned to service.
Regular monitoring
A planned monitoring programme helps anticipate expiry dates and centralise equipment management. It is particularly suitable for companies with several devices, several buildings or sites across different locations.
The inspection frequency is determined according to the devices, their environment, the manufacturer’s recommendations and the client’s internal organisation.
AED fleet audit and management
A multi-site company may have devices from different brands, installed at different times and equipped with consumables with different expiry dates.
SafetyFirst can carry out an assessment covering:
- an inventory of the AEDs;
- their locations;
- the brands and models;
- the serial numbers;
- the condition of the batteries and electrodes;
- upcoming expiry dates;
- identified faults;
- replacement requirements;
- recommendations for standardising the equipment fleet.
This centralised overview makes it easier to plan interventions and reduces the risk of overlooking a device or consumable.

Service after an AED has been used
Following an actual intervention, the AED must be inspected before being returned to service.
Depending on the model and circumstances, returning the device to service may require:
- replacing the electrodes used;
- checking or replacing the battery;
- restocking the emergency response kit;
- cleaning the outside of the device;
- checking its status indicator;
- checking the cabinet and signage;
- referring the device to the manufacturer or its technical service.
The aim is to quickly restore a complete and available device.
Service report and documentation
Once the inspection is complete, the relevant information can be recorded in a report or monitoring sheet specifying:
- the devices inspected;
- their condition at the time of the intervention;
- the consumables checked or replaced;
- the expiry dates recorded;
- the faults detected;
- the recommendations made;
- the next recommended inspection.
This documentation helps safety, HR, facility management and first aid managers monitor their AED fleet and document the work carried out.

Frequently asked questions about AED maintenance
The frequency depends on the model, the manufacturer's recommendations, the installation conditions and the internal monitoring system. Batteries, electrodes and status indicators should be checked regularly.
Self-tests detect certain internal faults, but do not necessarily check the condition of the cabinet, signage, emergency response kit or all expiry dates.
Electrodes must be replaced after use, once their packaging has been opened, if they are damaged or before their expiry date.
The service provided depends on the brands, models and nature of the work required. Information about each device is checked before the quote is prepared.
The device must be temporarily removed from its location, inspected and re-equipped before being returned to service. In particular, the electrodes used must be replaced.
